Elephant calf dies in Jalpaiguri reserve forest

The body of an elephant calf was recovered from Ghoramara beat of Buxa tiger reserve in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district, forest officials said on Thursday.

Forest guards said the two-year-old elephant calf had died in an area of the East range of the reserve forest on Tuesday night.

“Vicera of the elephant calf has been sent for post-mortem,” field director of the reserve forest Subhankar Sengupta said.

Two elephants had died in the forests of the district in the past two weeks.

On February 26, a two-year-old calf died at Chengmari range and another adult was killed in a fight over the possession of a female elephant on March 1 at Panbari beat in Rajabhatkhawa range.
