Five policemen were killed when their vehicle hit a roadside tree at Dhupguri More in Falakata on Sunday.
Six personnel of Falakata police station were returning from Kharakadam, about 8 km from Falakata, when they met with the accident around 1 pm. The driver suddenly lost control and the car hit the tree.
Five men — Gobinda Roy (51), Shyamal Tiwari (42), Biren Sarkar (56), Debi Charan Burman (51) and Gour Dey (42) — were killed while Dhirendranath Das was seriously injured. Roy and Tiwari were ASIs and Sarkar and Burman were home guards. Dey was the driver. Das, an SI, has been sent to Siliguri for treatment.
Ironically, the team had gone to Kharakadam to rescue two of their men who had met with an accident there.
