The Centre has sanctioned eight judges’ posts for Calcutta High Court. The chief justice’s secretariat today received a letter from the Union law ministry informing it about the decision.
The Jalpaiguri bench, which covers five districts, is yet begin operations. According to lawyers, it should have 12 judges.
The number of pending cases, lawyers said, could be reduced if similar matters were clubbed and heard together. “This will be possible if there are more judges,” said Uttam Majumdar, the bar association vice-president.
