In yet another instance of vigilante justice in West Bengal, a man was tied to a tree and beaten to death with iron rods after he allegedly tried to break into a house in Bhutnighat village of the district.
Jagannath Roy (45) was caught while trying to burgle a house on Friday night and soon a 300-strong mob beat him. An unconscious Roy was later taken to a health centre by some people and died soon afterwards, police said.
The spot was not far away from the house of West Bengal cabinet minister Jogesh Barman who was reportedly not at home when the incident occurred. A local panchayat leader claimed that Roy was a known history-sheeter and people were incensed with him.
