Garbage dumping on the banks of Karola River by the Jalpaiguri Municipality is allegedly threatening the river’s navigability and the town’s environment. It is a matter of concern since Jalpaiguri is vulnerable to floods.

“The stench from the garbage dump is unbearable. It is affecting the truckers and the residents of the area. Moreover, the dumping poses a threat to the river, which could lose navigability or alter course due to the obstruction,” alleged Mr Naru Kundu, secretary of the Truck Owners’ Association. The local residents alleged that the dump was proving a nesting ground for flies and mosquito. The Jalpaiguri Municipality chairman Mr Mohon Bose said: The Truck Owners’ Association had agreed to garbage to dumping on the spot. But if it is affecting the river then attention has to be paid to the matter,” he said, assuring a visit to the spot soon. The issue has raised concern among irrigation department officials too. “Now that the matter has been brought to our notice we shall investigate it and send a letter of recommendation to the municipality. The river cannot be allowed to suffer,” said Mr BK Santra, executive engineer, irrigation department in Jalpaiguri. n SNS
