This is a migrant story that will soon be forgotten. For this young couple from Jalpaiguri in West Bengal that came to Delhi on Sunday, cradling a one-and-a-half-month-old baby, the journey to the big city ended in the grave.
Akhid Ali, 30, and his wife, Daliya Bibi, 25, landed at New Delhi railway station on Sunday morning. Within hours, Akhid was killed in an accident and by the next evening, a distraught Daliya had hanged herself.
The couple had come in search of work. At the station, they boarded a bus. No one knows where they were headed but they got down at Nizamuddin. Others from their village back home had found a new life in the capital, so here they were — but it was death that they found waiting round the corner.
The authorities identified him from his railway ticket and a West Bengal identity card as Daliya, who was in a state of shock, was of no help. She didn't know Hindi either. Akhid was declared "brought dead" at the AIIMS trauma centre around 6.45pm on Sunday; the body was held back for postmortem. A distraught Daliya, unaware of her surroundings, was put up at the waiting room by trauma care workers. She was given a blanket and food. Her baby was cared for by these volunteers.
The West Bengal cops were informed of the tragic death in the morning and they, in turn, informed the family back home. This brought Daliya's brother-in-law, Matloom, who works in a plastic factory in Sohna in Haryana, rushing to the trauma centre in the afternoon with a friend in tow.
