Four workers of the Subarnapur tea estate in Jalpaiguri district died in a road accident near Lataguri on Saturday evening. Another 15 workers, injured in the mishap, are currently being treated in two batches at the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH) and the Sadar hospital in Jalpaiguri.
According to the Malbazar police, a group of around 35 workers of the Subarnapur Tea Estate had gone for a picnic to the Murti riverbank in the Gorumara wildlife sanctuary.
While on their way back, the front tire (right side) of the Swaraj Mazda passenger bus in which they were travelling burst and the vehicle overturned instantly. The mishap took place at about 6 p.m.
Three persons, identified as Ravi Roy (24), Santosh Roy (19) and Bishmadev Roy (25) died on the spot. Of the injured, five were rushed to the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital in Siliguri and another 10 to the Sadar Hospital in Jalpaiguri. Of them, one Kamal Oraon (15), today succumbed to his injuries at the NBMCH.
